Entertainment Webcasting Helps Band Reach Global Audience

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

Webcasting solutions have gained popularity for the benefits they provide to offices in reducing travel and helping with training, among a number of other uses.

Today, Webcasting is also providing the entertainment industry with a new way to reach audiences by making it possible for them to consume media online.

One group of musicians, The Allman Brothers Band, is the next to try out this technology as a way to offer their fans across the globe the ability to watch them perform live, over the Internet.

For this live broadcast, the band turned to Onstream Media a provider of live and on-demand Internet video to Webcast their 40th anniversary concert series.

The event, which will take place over 15 days, will be broadcast from Beacon Theatre in NYC beginning on March 9 and will consist of three-hour concerts with live, TV-like Internet broadcasts for fans to access from www.Moogis.com.

Reportedly, the show, which will feature surprise, celebrity musicians and a special tribute to the bands leader Duane Allman, who passed away in 1971, is sold out. This online webcast of the concert gives fans not lucky enough to have a ticket to the show, the ability to enjoy the live experience from the comfort of their homes.

By hosting the concert series via Webcast, the band and Onstream are demonstrating the power of Webcasting to change the world of music by offering bands the ability to reach an even broader audience and allow them to enjoy live music from wherever they're located.

"We wanted a way to share our special anniversary series with all of our fans worldwide, not just the ones who are able to join us in-person at the Beacon Theatre," said Butch Trucks, drummer and original band member for the Allman Brothers Band. "Onstream Media is a long-standing leader in managing and producing complex, live web-casting events. We would have had to work with multiple service providers to find the type of capabilities that Onstream Media solely provides."

Onstream will make use of the Akamai (News - Alert) content delivery network and its webcasting solution to stream the live events which will also be available for playback for up to 6 months.

Onstream said that The Allman Brothers Band is also leveraging their pay-per-view commerce capabilities to charge a fee for individuals to view all 15 live concerts. And that they will help the band to promote the upcoming Webcast event through an integrating marketing and communications campaign.

For musicians, the live Webcast also makes it more cost sensible to promote their music as they don’t need to pay for costly production and distribution channels.

Randy Selman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Onstream Media Corporation said, "This is a very special concert series for the band and for its fans, and with our help, their live performances will be shared with thousands around the globe in rich TV-like quality over the Web."
