Users of the beleaguered Windows Phone (News - Alert) platform might have a killer app: the caller ID application. Caller ID app maker Truecaller has announced a new version of its Windows Phone app that identifies callers from VoIP services such as Skype (News - Alert), according to Softpedia.
“It’s a one-stop shop for all types of calls – phone calls and VoIP calls –Truecaller is now able to detect calls from Skype, which makes Truecaller more of a powerhouse app to boost your phone experience,” Truecaller software engineer Hassaan Ahmed said in a company blog post.
Users can not only see their contacts, but also launch calls in Skype from within to the app without having to switch. They can also add tags to their contacts to identify them later. Users can even block contacts from their history with the new “Quick Block” feature.
One of Truecaller’s selling points is that it lets users block spammers. Truecaller says that it automatically blocks over 800 major spammers.
Another new feature is the ability to search contacts through Cortana, Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s (News - Alert) Siri and Google Now. Though Cortana has been widely publicized with the launch of Windows 10, Cortana first debuted in Windows Phone.
Truecaller has also added a number of new languages: Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Telugu, and Swahili. The company has also fixed a number of bugs with the new release.
The new application supports Windows Phone 8.1 and up. The company is trying to make the new Windows Phone version on par with its iOS and Android (News - Alert) versions.
On the other hand, if the Windows Phone app has the same features as the other more popular platforms, there might not be an incentive to use Windows Phone. The ability to launch Skype calls shows how mainstream Skype and other VoIP platforms are, even on mobile platforms.
