VoIP Telephony Usage May Expand in Poland

Freeconet recently commented on the state of VoIP telephony adoption in its home country of Poland. According to Telecompaper, the Polish VoIP provider believes that adoption of the technology will grow, despite a UKE report that suggests many Poles are adopting mobile telephony but are not aware of VoIP technology.

The World Internet Project, an international group that studies the spread and effects of Internet-based technologies, released its World Internet Project 2013 last December. The report shows that 62 percent of Poles are actively using the Internet with a range of devices. Of the other 38 percent, many people may not be aware of the benefits the Internet can have on their lives. Therefore, they may, by association, be unaware of the benefits VoIP services can have on them.

The WIP study says that there is a strong correlation between age and Internet use. Greater than 90 percent of Poles who are under the age of 30, but only 20 percent of Poles over age of 60, use the Internet. Four percent of the population that does not regularly use the Internet has had some experience with it, and they reportedly have more positive attitudes toward Internet-based technologies than those who have no experience. The main barriers to access include not having enough money to purchase a computer or Internet service and generally having no access to a computer at all.

Freeconet may be correct if the trend of Internet access continues. If computer and broadband access gets cheaper and more accessible, it is reasonable to think that Poles' attitudes toward the technology will improve. And as more Poles grow up with broadband as standard fare, more people overall will know about the usage and benefits of VoIP. Freeconet said the advantages to using VoIP include competitive rates and the choice of numbering zones, regardless of a citizen's physical location. Mobile device usage is also rising, and such devices can interface with VoIP services through Wi-Fi connections.
