WhosHere Blasts Four Billionth Free Text Message

A first-of-its-kind iOS application, WhosHere anticipates sending its 10 billionth text by the end of 2012, says its maker myRete, Inc.

Popularly known as mobile friend finder, WhosHere is a mobile social networking iPhone (News - Alert) app that works by showing users a list of compatible new friends in their immediate vicinity. Users can send unlimited free text messages, images, and VoIP calls according to their interests-without disclosing any personal information including phone number and email address.

According to a press release, WhosHere currently has more than four million registered users and has already sent over four billion free text messages across its network.

Founded in 2008 by myRete, WhosHere is the world's only mobile friend finder with "total freedom," a cost-free, worry-free, label-free approach to location-based dating and networking, says the company.

Available for free download on Apple's (News - Alert) iTunes App Store, as well as at WhosHere.net, the WhosHere app is compatible with major Apple iOS devices such as iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

According to myRete, WhosHere has already had a major global impact – attracting millions of users all over the world in just three years since it was introduced. And, the key feature to its success is its distinctly safe yet unrestricted social environment and mobile friend finding feature. It is popular in North America, Korea and the Middle East.

"WhosHere is free in every sense of the word," said Bryant Harris, founder and CEO, WhosHere, in a statement. "Individual users are free to provide as little or as much information as they choose, while others are free to browse that information for whatever purposes they envision – romance, friendship, networking. It's dating app success without the dating app. No labels, no fears, no expectations. Just total freedom and total control."

Backed by Lightbank – the technology investment fund created by Groupon co-founders Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell – WhosHere is currently localized in 14 languages. It is already recording over 15 million free text messages per day.

"We're doing our best to lighten the load for wireless carriers," added Harris. "As the first out of the gate for this type of offering, we've had ample time to strengthen and refine our product. Clearly, the demand for our service is here, it's growing, and it's keeping our developers awfully busy."

In February, WhosHere had sent over two billion free text messages through its network. And, in April, it achieved three million total downloads.
