Vonage (News - Alert) Holdings, a provider of cloud communications services and VoIP management services to connect customers through cloud-connected devices worldwide, announced it has been granted a new mobile VoIP handoff patent.

The patent No. 8,223,720 titled "Systems and Methods for Handoff of Mobile Telephone Call in a VoIP Environment” describes an innovation that allows a mobile handset user who is on a voice-over-IP call to seamlessly move between multiple wireless data connections without dropping the call. 

The '720 patent is Vonage's third patent to issue in six weeks. Earlier in July the company announced it was awarded two new patents.

The first patent, U.S. Patent No. 8,213,594 titled "Method and Apparatus for Placing a Long Distance Call Based on a Virtual Phone (News - Alert) Number” was granted on July 3, 2012. It allows consumers to communicate to distant locations without incurring long distance or international calling charges.  

The second patent, U.S. Patent No. 8,194,843 — titled "Method and Apparatus for Busy Override in an Internet Protocol Based Telephone System," was granted on June 5, 2012. This patent provides a call waiting override feature for the handling of calls that have been identified as urgent based upon the pattern of call attempts from a given caller.

The company describes these achievements as the outcome of its ongoing innovation supporting its mobile growth initiative, including its new Vonage Mobile app for Android and iPhone (News - Alert) smartphones. These apps are designed to enable free high-definition calls and texts to other app users worldwide, as well as low-cost international calls to phones without the VoIP app. 

"Our recent success obtaining this and other patents is a result of the focused efforts of our technical teams and the sound execution of our intellectual property strategy," said chief legal officer Kurt M. Rogers, in a statement.  

Vonage offers Vonage World plan with unlimited calling to more than 60 countries with popular features like call waiting, call forwarding and visual voicemail for a low monthly rate. Our Vonage Mobile app lets users make free high-definition calls and send free texts to all users of the app, worldwide. The app works over Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G wireless data networks.
