VoIP Week in Review: CRTC Keeps Control of VoIP, Verizon to Offer Skype in March

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

Welcome to the latest edition of TMCnet’s VoIP Week in Review featuring this week’s top headlines in the VoIP industry.

This week, Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission, the Canadian telecommunications regulator, reaffirmed its VoIP price controls, first issued in May 2005, allowing the commission to set prices for VoIP services as well as set rules for legacy phone service.

At the 2010 Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) in Barcelona this past week, Verizon Wireless and Skype made big VoIP headlines with a newly announced strategic partnership that will bring Skype (News - Alert) to Verizon smartphones in March.

This move will help Verizon enhance their offerings for smartphone users who will have the ability to place global calls.

HelloSoft (News - Alert) also announced this week that it has extended its carrier proven VoIP and Voice Call Continuity or “VCC” solution suite for future 4G-LTE (News - Alert) devices.

In addition, VoIP solutions provider Nextiva announced it was awarded 2009 “Product of the Year” by INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine for its Connect 360 hosted business VoIP service.

“This prestigious award reflects the commitment and hard work everyone at Nextiva has made. We are dedicated to delivering high quality business communication services and ultimately making it easier for small businesses to get advantages that, until now, only large enterprise corporations can afford,” said Tracy Conrad, president of Nextiva. “This is an excellent way to start 2010.”

Finally this week, snom technology announced it selected Voipfone as an advanced service provider partner to provide hosted VoIP services for small business and residential customers.

According to company officials, features such as call transfer, voicemail integration and hold music were tested using Voipfone’s service to ensure they were fully compatible with the snom handsets.

That’s all for this week, but be sure to check back with TMCnet throughout the week for all the latest headlines in VoIP news as it happens. Until next week…
