TelcoBridges (News - Alert) has announced that its FreeSBC Virtual Session Border Controller is now available via software download.

Interested parties can locate it at Freesbc.com. It can run on bare metal, OpenStack, and VMware servers.

This virtual session border controller does session handling. And it protects against denial of service and distributed DOS attacks.

TelcoBridges, which was established in 2002, also sells signaling, transcoding, and VoIP gateways. The suppliers’ solutions are in use on carrier networks in more than 100 countries.

Session border controllers were among the first network elements to go virtual as part of the move by communications service providers – and their suppliers – to embrace more software-centric solutions.

A UCbuyer article from September 2016 explains that there are three primary deployment models for virtual SBCs. Business customers can buy and maintain vSBCs. The vSBC can live at the customer premises, but be managed by a service provider. Or the SBC can live in the service provider cloud.

Meanwhile, OpenWave Mobility’s latest NFV Playbook, authored by Sue Rudd of Strategy Analytics (News - Alert), identifies the follow as the most important applications for NFV:

• Metro SD-WAN

• NFV telco data centers using SDN controllers

• Pre-NFV/SDN-based virtualized legacy infrastructure equipment

• To support an operations first strategy

• To enable new agile processes for faster service creation and activation

• Virtual customer premises equipment

Speaking of virtual customer premises equipment, Statistics MRC expects to see strong growth in this area over the next five years. The firm anticipates the global vCPE space, which was worth $347.41 million in 2015, will experience a compound annual growth rate of 38.1 percent between then and 2022.

Key players in the vCPE space, according to the firm, include Arista Networks, Brocade Communications Systems (News - Alert) Inc. (now a Broadcom company), Cisco Systems Inc., Dell Inc., Ericsson, Hewlett Packard Enterprises, International Business Machines Corp., Juniper Networks Inc., NEC (News - Alert) Corp., and Versa Networks. As for SBC suppliers, there are a variety of them as well, and many of them now provide this network functionality as software-only solutions.
