A new report by Future Market Insights offers a review of voice over IP technology, market forces, and past and expected future growth.

“Growth of the global VoIP services market is driven by technological advancements, leading to roll out of advanced networks and increased usage of these service over various networks,” Future Market Insights notes. “Business customers adopting cloud-based VoIP services due to cost efficiency and packaged service offerings is another factor driving growth. The market is further being driven by telecommunication players constantly diversifying to offer customers VoIP services.”

The company says there were 98.9 billion corporate subscribers in 2012, accounting for $43.27 billion. And it forecasts that the number of subscribers, which it calls the corporate consumer segment, will reach 204.8 billion by 2020. That, Future Market Insights adds, will generate $86.20 billion in revenues.

Meanwhile, Future Market Insights says, the phone-to-phone segment of the market was worth $15.88 billion and reached 35.9 million subscribers in 2012. That is poised to reach $44.78 billion and 116.5 million subscribers in 2019.

Computer-to-phone communications during the same timeframes were $27.35 million in revenue and 58.3 million in subscribers, and are forecast to reach $56.56 billion in revenue and 128.3 million subscribers.

As for the computer-to-computer segment of the VoIP services market, that had 57.4 million subscribers and generated $20.74 billion in revenues globally in 2012. But Future Market Insights says that by 2019 that segment is likely to include 72.2 million subscribers and account for $24.74 billion in revenue.

In 2012 there were an estimated 52.7 million VoIP subscribers globally, generating $20.70 billion in revenues. The phone-to-phone VoIP segment is the fastest growing segment of this realm, continuing its rapid rise through at least 2019, according to Future Market Insights.

“This robust growth is attributed to service providers transitioning from circuit-switched networks to packet-switched networks,” Future Market Insights opines. “Hence the market has been witnessing a shift from traditional telephony using CDMA or GSM technology, to VoIP services using cellular networks such as 3G and 4G.”

Other technology discussed in the report includes:

• H.323,

• Inter Asterisk eXchange,

• Media Gateway Control Protocol,

• Real Time Protocol, and

• Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert).

Speaking of technology, all of the above would seem to provide good opportunity for VoIP infrastructure suppliers. Suppliers in the VoIP realm include companies that provide IMS solutions, session border controllers, and VoIP gateways, among other hardware and software.
