Wireless Growth Means Great Opportunities for VoIP Vendors

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Wireless appears to be a consistent area of growth as consumers and the commercial sector continue to flock to the ease and capabilities afforded in this technology. In fact, according to Infonetics Research (News - Alert), the wireless LAN market enjoyed 20 percent growth in the fourth quarter of 2012.

The market research firm recently released excerpts from its Wireless LAN Equipment and WiFi (News - Alert) Phones report. Companies competing in the VoIP routers and Ethernet extender markets are enjoying increased opportunities and revenues as the market hit a new high of $4 billion for 2012.

Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise networks and video at Infonetics, shared in a company press release that WLAN continues to enjoy the spotlight in terms of growth as enterprises are building out wireless capabilities and taking advantage of the latest devices and ubiquitous connectivity.

Exploring the highlights of the market’s success, worldwide revenue for WLAN in the fourth quarter enjoyed 4 percent growth. This revenue included WLAN controllers, enterprise access points and WiFi phones. In the fourth quarter, revenue hit $1.1 billion. As the demand for WLAN continues to grow, sources of this demand are global. Double digit growth was seen in all major geographic regions, including the EMEA, for 2012.

As service providers continue to deploy WiFi, outdoor access point shipments are enjoying a jump in demand. In fact, shipments grew 88 percent in 2012 alone. Of the access points that are shipped today, 88 percent are based on 802.11n. Infonetics expects that next generation 802.11ac products will begin to ship in April of 2013. This shift will usher in the transition to the next generation in wireless technology.

Market leaders are enjoying the pace in wireless growth and Cisco (News - Alert) continues to protect its leading position. The giant added just 1.5 points in revenue market share for 2012, which is considered significant for a company its size. A point in share was also added for Aruba, the only other WLAN provider to enjoy double-digit revenue share.

WiFi phones are expected to show significant growth as the economy continues to rebound and Infonetics anticipates companies will update core communications infrastructure. The BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) phenomenon is also gaining speed as professionals throughout the world are relying on mobile technologies to enable productivity.

Companies with VoIP environments must be paying attention to trends to anticipate changes and embrace next generation technologies that can streamline communications and even bring costs down. In the process, those vendors who promote VoIP routers and Ethernet extenders like Patton whose portfolio covers all aspects of enabling VoIP and extending broadband capabilities will reap the benefits.
