College Finds Easy Convergence with Phybridge VoIP Enabler

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Not long ago, an Illinois-based college recognized the need for an all IP telephony and Unified Communications (News - Alert) environment. At the same time, the institution also recognized there would be obstacles to successfully completing the convergence their voice and data networks. Fortunately, Phybridge (News - Alert) was able to help with its VoIP enabler technology.

In working with MidCo, a Phybridge partner, the educational institution was able to implement a full IP network, extending the organization’s communications capabilities and consolidated all Phybridge switches into one building. MidCo used Phybridge’s UniPhyer as its VoIP enabler and deployed all IP phones in a separate building on the same campus, making the efficient use of available space.

As a result of this implementation, the customer was able to eliminate the costs, challenges, risks and complexities that normally accompany the creation of a LAN topology where every IP phone serves as a switch for the data device to which it is connected. Phybridge promotes the value of centralized convergence, focusing on a lower cost and lower risk approach for all clients.

The company’s UniPhyer is positioned as the only network switch available on the market designed to deliver Ethernet and Power over Ethernet over a single pair of wire. Phybridge is able to provide reach of more than 1,200 feet, enabling customers to transform the existing voice infrastructure into an IP path with power designed specifically for IP telephony.

The Phybridge is the ideal standard for IP telephony infrastructure, offering customers the necessary technology to leverage existing telephony cabling for a complete IP network. This approach delivers on the promise of central convergence with the LAN, creating a dedicated path for voice, Quality of Service (QoS) and Power over Ethernet (POE) for each desktop.

Customers rely on this VoIP enabler technology to eliminate risk and disruption while they greatly reduce the overall cost associated with LAN-readiness activities. For MidCo and the college in Illinois, the deployment was reported as “easy to install…so far so good.”
