Sonus and NMS to Deliver IMS Apps to Mobile Handsets

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Sonus Networks Inc. announced on Wednesday that it joined forces with NMS Communications, a provider of technologies for mobile applications and infrastructure to streamline the delivery of IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS)-based applications and services to mobile handsets. The move will enable wireless and wireline operators to deploy a full suite of IMS-based multimedia services including NMS' Active Phone Book and apps, such as instant messaging (IM), push-to-talk and video sharing on a variety of mobile handsets.

"Today's generation of mobile phone users want more than just voice; they want to leverage a full suite of data and presence-driven tools that bring the communication experience to the next level," said Mike Hluchyj, founder and chief technology officer, Sonus Networks (News - Alert) in a statement. "By integrating NMS' client-side technology with the most robust IMS-ready network architecture available on the market today, we're empowering network operators to unleash the potential of IMS and offer consumers a new breed of innovative services and powerful applications."

Sonus' IMS-ready SMARRT Wireless system allows users to migrate to full 3G-network compliance. By enabling interoperability with NMS' IMS Mobile Client network operators, users can rapidly deploy a growing number of multimedia IP communication services on mobile devices spanning 2.5G, EDGE, 3G IMS, WiFi and Bluetooth wireless networks.

"From day one, Sonus and NMS have embraced the principles that are the foundation of IMS and have heralded the importance of dynamic new applications as the cornerstone of a successful service offering that is attractive to end users," said John Orlando, chief marketing officer, NMS Communications. "This interoperability and co-marketing relationship leverages Sonus' experience in the IMS-industry along with NMS' rich suite of IMS applications to help operators quickly get their services to market, accelerate service take rates and drive annual revenue per user."

NMS' IMS Mobile Client can be deployed across a range of mobile phone manufacturers' existing handsets and can be customized and re-branded for use within a service provider's network. The NMS IMS Mobile Client is currently available for network equipment and service vendors bringing to market pre-IMS and IMS mobile systems to wireless and fixed/mobile operators worldwide.

Sonus made news towards the end of February when it announced it will offer its IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) advice as a founding member of the IMS Forum, formerly known as the International Packet Communications Consortium (IPCC).

According to the company's news release, the IMS Forum's mission is to "accelerate the adoption of IMS by providing an environment for discussion and resolution of real-world implementation issues, such as interoperability and standards-based architectures in the application layer."

"The universal adoption of IMS across all types of service providers and application developers around the globe provides a tremendous opportunity to reshape how we think about communications," said Steve Edwards, chief marketing officer, Sonus Networks in a statement. "Sonus has been a leading innovator in the VoIP industry and a strong advocate for standards-based interoperability. Our team has some of the deepest knowledge in the industry, and we're proud to leverage that expertise as a founding member of the IMS Forum working to promote the adoption of IMS protocols."

As a founding member of IMS Forum, Sonus will collaborate with other service providers, application developers, system integrators and government agencies to accelerate the development of IMS frameworks.

"Since the company's founding, Sonus has been focused solely on the development of carrier-class VoIP solutions, and as a founding member of the IMS Forum, Sonus' contributions will be invaluable in our efforts to promote IMS as the foundation for the next generation of communications networks," said Michael Khalilian, chairman and president, IMS Forum.
