VoIP service provider Sonus Networks (News - Alert) on Wednesday announced that its IMS-ready core platform will now support the newly standardized method to provide both Local Number Portability (LNP) and Mobile Number Portability (MNP) services for Japanese network operators.
Starting next month, Japanese network operators will be able to benefit from selecting their preferred network provider, while keeping their existing phone number.
"LNP and MNP are critical to allowing consumers to choose their provider and to creating a healthy, competitive market for network operators. Sonus Networks is committed to helping operators in the region comply with the new legislation seamlessly and efficiently," said Sonus' chairman and CEO Hassan Ahmed in a statement. "The ability to change providers while retaining your existing phone number is an important driver for innovation, and consumers now have the flexibility to pick the type of service that's tailored to their specific needs."
With Sonus' software upgrade, the company's core trunking system will support all methods of Japanese LNP and MNP with an onboard database and number translation features that are applicable to most carrier types.
Sonus made news earlier this month when it appointed Dr. Vikram Saksena to the post of chief technology officer (CTO). The executive previously served as Sonus' chief scientist. As CTO, he will be responsible for the company's overall technology direction.Sonus also announced that its founder Mike Hluchyj retired from the company that day.
Today's news finds Sonus' top executives preparing to speak at various sessions featured at this year's INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO East taking place this week, January 23-26, 2007 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
