Queen Alexandra Hospital in the UK city of Portsmouth is currently in the midst of a major expansion. As part of this project, the hospital is upgrading its IT systems to better serve the needs of doctors/nurses, patients and their families.
One element of these enhancements is the installation of a software from Sentillion, a specialist in virtual call center and remote desktop solutions, that will enable clinicians to access important information quickly from various locations, CareandHealth.com said in a report.
The new system will be hooked up to the hospital’s electronic patient record databases which currently contain scanned records in PDF format. When the new system is fully integrated with the hospital’s processes, doctors will be able to use paper forms tagged with special barcodes (for later scanning) or skip the paper completely and enter data directly using a computer.
In the hospital’s critical care unit, this setup will be linked to an X-ray imaging system, a lab test requesting system and a system that stores critical care information, CareandHealth.com said.
All the information from these different sources will be accessible to doctors using a single password, thanks to the software from Sentillion. Further down the road, the hospital will be linked into UK’s National Programme for IT; at that point, authorized people will have access using smartcards.
Philip Scott, head of IT projects and development at Queen Alexandra Hospital said in the CareandHealth.com report that the Sentillion software will greatly increase both efficiency and the quality of patient care. In the past, doctors often did not have access to information they needed to care effectively for patients, and information sometimes was misfiled. The new system does away with these problems and introduces an audit trail.
“It is convenient, and it means doctors know what they need to know to help the patient,” Scott was quoted as saying in the report, about the new system.
