On Tuesday Piston Cloud, creators of the massively scalable open source cloud framework using Openstack, announced that they will be entering an exclusive licensing deal with Gridcentric. The main component of the agreement is that Gridcentric’s Virtual Memory Streaming (VMS) technology will now be available with Piston Cloud’s Openstack software. According to the company, this will let them distribute secure, low-cost virtual desktops without any added complexity. The Openstack software will also now support Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

“Until now, there have been several challenges to VDI adoption in the enterprise, including prohibitive costs, security issues and complexity,” said Joshua McKenty, co-founder and CEO of Piston Cloud. “Bundling VMS technology with Piston Enterprise OS doubles the virtual machine density per server, requiring less physical RAM (News - Alert) without any impact to user customization or application performance.”

Now, in addition to the Piston Cloud OS creating a private cloud that can automate IT systems, Gridcentric’s VMS technology will allow users to scale their virtual infrastructure automatically and instantaneously, all while substantially lowering memory requirements.

“Piston Cloud has been at the center of driving innovation and adoption of the OpenStack project and we’re excited to be partnering with them,” said Eric Shefler, CEO of Gridcentric. “The combination of Gridcentric’s VMS technology with Piston Enterprise OS allows us to offer customers an extremely flexible, dynamic and affordable VDI solution.”

Piston Cloud was only started last year, but by very qualified teams from the likes of Rackspace (News - Alert) and NASA. However they are still a young company and were wise to have partnered with Gridcentric who have been around since 2009. Gridcentric’s technology is not only a great addition to Piston Cloud’s software, but they are also backed by one of the leading cloud, virtualization and networking technology venture capitalists. Further details of the exclusivity agreement will likely be revealed in the next couple of days.
