In today’s rapidly advancing technological world, in which new ways to communicate are constantly being dreamed up and put into action, it’s easy to let some of the more conventional technologies fall by the wayside. But this is a mistake—especially for wholesale providers that cater to VoIP and communications services. And what’s the communication technology that should be getting more limelight? Text messaging.

Many may think of text messaging as a way to communicate with friends and family, but the applications certainly do not stop there. Text messaging is being adopted by hospitals, businesses and government agencies of all kinds these days as a means of spreading information quickly and effectively. But text messaging isn’t an ideal communication tool simply because it’s fast—it’s also accessible to more people. While the vast majority of people own cell phones, many do not have smartphones. Companies opting for over-the-top (OTT) messaging services, which require users to download additional apps and programs onto their devices, limit their outreach to only users with smartphones. Text messaging, on the other hand, is available through every phone service provider, and virtually all cell phones are text-enabled.

At the same time, companies with OTT apps end up eating data faster than the Cookie Monster, and data costs money. Texting does not require a data plan, and it’s arguably the cheapest way for carriers to transmit messages. It has even been argued that SMS can serve as an alternative to the Internet in parts of the world where the Internet is sparse, further underscoring the fact that while the Internet and OTT apps are viable options, text messaging connects far more people, plain and simple—this is where wholesalers and communications providers should really start tuning in.

When you think about it, companies that dismiss the idea of incorporating text messaging into their services are missing a crucial link in the chain of communications. Text messaging, with its ability to reach more people faster, fills the gap between website interfaces and email channels in company outreach. Employees and customers alike are already familiar with the technology, and it’s widely available.

If businesses want to improve their communications efficiency, look no further than text messaging. Its ease of use can lead to better customer experiences overall, and save businesses money in the process. Wholesalers know their clients well, and know their pain points; offering texting services can help guide these companies to successful resolutions. Solutions like TextGen—which can text-enable any existing landline—are already available on the market and in use today. If it’s more efficient, more cost effective, and reaches more people, companies that ignore text messaging are leaving themselves at a disadvantage. Wholesalers can help prevent this, and conduct better business themselves, by offering texting to their clients.
