Telepresence Podcast: Clients' Needs Determine Telepresence, Videoconferencing Scope

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

Deploying a new technology isn’t always easy. Especially when companies are dealing with something they haven’t tried before.

While the same mentality is true for businesses looking to use telepresence and videoconferencing services, the actually process to determine what solution will work best is simple, Mark Szotkowski, of Portfolio Communication Solutions, a communications broker/master agent that represents voice and data companies in the United States, told TMCnet in a recent podcast.

From a network standpoint, businesses should approach their conferencing infrastructure – whether its telepresence, HD videoconferencing or SD videoconferencing - by simply understanding their organizations’ needs, he said.

“Just like any other organization, when looking at network infrastructure, you need to have a thorough understanding of what the clients need are,” Szotkowski said, who spoke with Bob McCandless, CEO of Brightcom, a provider of integrated telepresence and videoconferencing solutions on the topic. “What are their conferencing goals?”

Szotkowski said businesses should decide whether they want a small-scale solution, such as one-way conferencing or multi-way conferencing service. But no matter what companies choose, “each type of design needs to be specific to customers’ requirements,” he said. “The largest requirement is what the network would need to be built off of.”

For example, a company looking to deploy a multi-location solution would have much different network requirements than one launching telepresence services, he said.
