The Telecom Expense Management Industry Association (TEMIA (News - Alert)) recently promoted the adoption of “telecommunications management” as a new broad umbrella term to describe the industry amongst its members.
Telecommunications management conveys all the activities enterprises manage as part of overseeing their mobile and fixed telecommunications network. It comprises savings, visibility and control for global communications services, telecom expense management, communications lifecycle management, wireless expense management, mobile device management and data and device security.
“Adoption of this phrase provides an opportunity for firms to re-position themselves in a more strategic role with customers, expressing value beyond cost savings into performance,” said Joe Basili, managing director for TEMIA, in a statement. “We want to tell enterprises, if you do not have telecommunications management you are missing out; you are not getting the most value from your network nor are you running it most efficiently from a cost and performance perspective.”
TEMIA members manage more than $31 billion of wireless, voice and data telecom spend and have a wide range of interests. By adopting telecommunications management, the members will be able to compete in a larger market with more opportunities.
Wireless Analytics, a member of TEMIA, is a provider of outsourced mobility management services such as online visibility and reporting, wireless policy development, cost analysis, procurement, complete help desk services, inventory management and carrier invoice management.
Erik Eames, managing director at Wireless Analytics, stated, “As a leader in enterprise wireless management, focused solely on the mobile space, Wireless Analytics is embracing the term telecommunications management, because we believe it successfully communicates the full range of capabilities offered by TEMIA firms, beyond traditional TEM or WEM.”
In May 2012, TEMIA published a TEM request for proposal (RFP) template to help educate the market and reduce the time for organizations to buy a TEM solution. This paper provides valuable information on understanding TEM and identifying things to look for, even if you do not plan to issue RFP. Organizations that do not plan to issue RFP will find value in identifying critical things to look for when evaluating TEM solutions providers.
