Nuance Intro's Mobile Speech Platform

By Stefania Viscusi, TMCnet Assistant Editor

Nuance Communications, provider of speech applications and solutions, is hosting the Conversations 2006 and co-located Conversations Mobile event this week in Orlando, Florida. The sold out show, which features over 800 customers, partners and speech industry thought leaders, kicked-off yesterday along with the introduction of Nuance (News - Alert) Mobile Speech Platform.

Using intelligent text-to-speech and speech recognition technology, the newly introduced platform gives developers a way to offer complete voice interaction with mobile devices. Users can communicate using their natural voice to compose email or SMS messages, surf the net on their mobile device, even have directions and messages read aloud to them.

In addition, "the Nuance Mobile Speech Platform largely eliminates the need to use structured phrasing when speaking queries and even filters "um" and "ah" type utterances, for fast, highly accurate recognition and response," a news release noted.

Usability soars when applications are built using Nuance Mobile Speech Platform. Once voice is added to mobile devices, it eliminates the need for mobile users to use their thumbs for texting or emailing and they can instead speak their commands and queries.

"If operators want to sell more mobile content, then they're going to have to make finding it and buying it a no-brainer. Speech removes the pain from the content discovery process and the latest advances in speech recognition make voice search ready for prime-time. The Nuance Mobile Speech Platform is a solution mobile application developers can leverage to make content accessible and monetizible, creating value for developers, content providers and operators and vastly improving the user experience for consumers," commented Peggy Anne Salz, author of the Informa report Mobile Search and Content Discovery in a statement to the press.

The news release also outlines more of the possibilities created by speech enabling mobile applications, including pre-built components offered by the Nuance Mobile Platform and the solutions mobile application developers can utilize.
