Google Translator Translates Spanish Language Contact Center Solutions for Taxpayers

By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor

Launched just this week on the State Department of Revenue Services' website, the chat translation software Google (News - Alert) Translator will be making it that much easier for taxpayers to understand how to pay their taxes.

This web-based chat translation tool has the ability to quickly translate information on the website into 53 languages, covering a very broad range of languages from Afrikaans to Chinese, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese and Yiddish, an article revealed.

Users just have to go to the website, select the translator function located at the upper left side, choose the language you want, and the text will then switch automatically.

"Our job is to make taxpayer information and assistance available and accessible," said Revenue Services Commissioner Kevin B. Sullivan, in a statement. "Being able to translate Connecticut tax information for speakers of languages in addition to English can only help our state's diverse population understand and voluntarily comply with what's expected of them."

The recent addition of the translator was something that one of the agency's valued employees, Noemi Perry, who is originally from Puerto Rico, had been pushing for quite some time. "It's something that I've always been passionate about," she said, "mainly because I deal with the Spanish-speaking taxpayers" in the department's call center.

Perry added in a phone interview with Hartford Courant that previously, factors that involved legality got in the way. However, this all changed radically when Sullivan became commissioner this year as "he was 100 percent for it … as long as we provided the proper disclaimer" to the effect that "regardless of what you interpret [from the translated website], at the end of the day you are responsible for any taxes that you owe."

If users are finding to difficult to understand how to work the chat translation program, there are call center agents who are fluent in 15 languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, and Ukrainian ready and willing to assist in the tax paying process.

Department Spokeswoman Sarah E. Kaufman relayed that even though the Google chat translation has been created to translate phrases as accurately as possible, it isn't always perfect and sometimes loses nuances in certain languages, the article added.
