Software Licensing Challenges Are Not Necessarily Technical

“There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things” – Niccolo Machiavelli

Organizational change can be difficult. Whether your business is large or small, many within it will be resistant to change, especially those who are most successful and thrive in the current state of affairs.  In the classic book “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson, we learn that change is inevitable, and that we have to develop the right attitude about change.  What offers more of a challenge is being the agent of change, or the expert on the change that needs to be done.

In a video from Flexera Software, Andy Roth, an Information Technology, Software Development and R&D Management Leader, discusses how difficult it can be to work within a company and make suggestions on how to change it from within.  Often such pitches are seen through a filter of internal politics and many coworkers do not always trust the advice of their peers within the company, even if those proffering solutions that create change have “done their homework.”

Cynics and those with distrustful natures are quick to accuse the notion of change as being only “for the sake of change” or for the person with the idea for change to garner some sort of credit with his superiors within the company.

Roth’s advice is to let a professional handle the pitch to colleagues and co-workers; outsiders can carry much more credibility with their suggestions even if those who invited them to the meeting are already of the same mind about a particular organizational change.

Flexera has many professionals with experience in helping other businesses transition to software and know how to deal with licensing issues.  An even bigger benefit of using these sorts of consultants is that they can use examples of changes from other businesses in your industry to support the kinds of changes that you want to see and counsel your team to the best possible solution.
