8x8 to Offer Packet8 Softalk Office with Intel VoIP Adapter

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Voice and video over IP service provider 8x8 announced on Thursday it will now offer its Packet8 Softalk Office VoIP application with the Intel (News - Alert) 600SM PCI Phone Adapter.

Personal computers equipped with both the Softalk Office and the Intel 600SM PCI Phone Adapter will enable users to use a standard telephone, instead of a PC headset or other special purpose device, to make and receive calls to and from any phone in the world.

"We are very pleased to be working with Intel to bring 8x8's Packet8 small business VoIP services to PC vendors and resellers, in a manner that makes it easy for end users to access VoIP services," said 8x8's vice president of strategic alliances Christopher Peters in a statement. "This affiliation with Intel provides 8x8 with a ground floor opportunity to gain exposure in the expansive small business marketplace."

The Softalk Office-enabled Intel 600SM PCI Phone Adapter will be available to PC OEMs next month.

"We are pleased to work with 8x8 on our new desktop-focused VoIP product, the Intel 600SM PCI Phone Adapter. Systems built on Intel Desktop boards featuring the increased performance of Intel dual-core technology and integrated with the Intel 600SM PCI Phone Adapter, are uniquely suited to handle the performance demands of VoIP applications. The exponential growth of the worldwide VoIP telephony market will allow small businesses and residential customers to realize the significant cost-saving benefits and powerful phone services traditionally associated with the enterprise segment," noted Philip Chen, marketing director for Intel.

The voice and video over IP service provider made news yesterday as it announced that it was awarded U.S. Patent No. 7,092,379 for technology used in routing telephony signals over the Internet and standard switched telephone communications networks. This patent brings 8x8’s list to a total of 62 patents awarded in the U.S.

The VoIP and video service provider also launch yesterday an on-site installation service program for its Packet8 Virtual Office VoIP hosted PBX phone service.

The company announced it joined forces with CompUSA in order to give Virtual Office subscribers nationwide the opportunity to elect to have their service professionally installed by one of CompUSA's "Techknowledgists." CompUSA has a network of 20,000 certified technicians nationwide who provide consumers and businesses with support throughout the U.S.
