IP Fax Podcast: Achieving UM Integration

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

When it comes to deploying IP fax services, many users aren’t too concerned with the intricacies of the technology. Most companies want to ensure the service works, and that it works well.

Officials with Sagem-Interstar, a provider of IP fax server solutions, said there are a number of technical aspects vendors follow to offer flawless IP fax service.  But to achieve a Unified Messaging or UM integration from Microsoft Corp., vendors have a higher threshold to meet, Matthew Miller, product manager for Sagem-Interstar, explained in a TMCnet podcast.

Specifically, vendors must follow three criterion to achieve a UM integration. The first, Miller said, is to support SIP over TCP, which pushes fax standards into the next generation VoIP solution. The second is to offer TLS for security. And finally, vendors need the ability to support SMP TLS for security purposes, Miller said.

“These three anchor elements must be part of a solution to be…UM certified,” Miller said.

A technical white paper, authored by Sagem-Interstar and Microsoft (News - Alert), offers additional details and is available on Sagem-Interstar’s Web site here.

Also in the podcast, Miller also describes how a simplified version of a fax call flow works. To listen to the full podcast, visit the IP fax channel on TMCnet, or click here.
