xG Technology (News - Alert), the developer of a portfolio of wireless communications technologies, including cognitive radio networks, recently announced that it has received a $3.3 million purchase order from Northeast Florida Telephone Company, Inc. ("NEFCOM"), a Macclenny, Florida-based provider of local phone, long distance, Internet services and telephone equipment.
According to the terms of the agreement, xG will provide xMax cognitive radio networking equipment, an xMSC mobile switching center, and xMod personal hotspots, and engineering services to NEFCOM. The solutions will allow NEFCOm to provide wireless voice and advanced broadband services in Baker County, Florida.
xMax cognitive radio network is a mobile VoIP and data system that utilizes an end-to-end Internet Protocol (IP) system architecture. The xMax product suite includes a line of high-performance access points, fixed and mobile personal WiFi (News - Alert) hotspots, mobile switching centers (MSC’s) as well as network management and deployment tools.
The xMax Mobile Switching Center (xMax-MSC (News - Alert)) is the backbone network element in the xMax regional network. The xMax-MSC controls the delivery of voice and data services, and manages all elements in the regional network (xAPs and xMod personal hotspots). On the other hand, xMod is a mobile hotspot device that allows users of Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones, tablets, notebooks and other devices to seamlessly access the Internet through the xMax cognitive radio network. The xMod acts as a bridge between Wi-Fi-enabled end user devices and the wide-area xMax radio network.
Commenting on the announcement, Larry Townes, chairman and CEO of Townes, said, "I look forward to xG's successful deployment and very much anticipate xG's promise of high quality, reasonably priced broadband service for the United States' rural telephone providers and the important customer base which they serve."
George Schmitt, xG Non-Executive Director, said, "We are very pleased to receive this order from NEFCOM. Rural broadband is a key target market for xG, and this announcement validates the potential of xMax to deliver high-performance, cost-effective wireless capability to the thousands of rural and independent service providers seeking an effective broadband solution."
