For the most part, when we think of power outages we often consider how they affect homes and businesses. Power outages at home can be a pain—especially if they occur during a big sporting event—and they can damage equipment in businesses and bring operations to a halt. Too often, we overlook how severely power outages can impact live events.

Imagine, if you will, that you’re three or four songs into a Train concert, singing along to Drops of Jupiter, when all of a sudden the lights and audio go out. Next thing you know, you might as well be on Jupiter because you’re completely taken out of the concert experience that you paid for.

This exact event took place the other night at the Blossom Music Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The venue experienced technical problems that caused the lawn to lose sound during the Saturday night performance. The pavilion luckily didn’t lose power, but the 13,500 people seated on the lawn certainly did.

In apology, Live Nation stated, “We apologize to all of the fans affected tonight by the sound issues at the Train concert at Blossom Music Center. Due to a power outage, the sound on the lawn during the show was not functioning properly.  We are investigating the situation and will be contacting the lawn patrons with additional information within the next few days. We appreciate your patience and will be in touch as soon as possible.”

Although the outage resulted in some angry fans, luckily nothing worse came to pass. Power outages have been known to cause surges that fry equipment. With all of the sound and lighting equipment at a huge concert like that, the outage could have caused some seriously expensive damage. That’s why it’s so important to have power protection and uninterruptable power supply (UPS) systems in place, no matter if you’re protecting your home, business or concert venue.
