PSEG this week launched an online map that provides its Long Island customers with guidance on electric system outages and an app that lets them more easily report outages.

That helps customers and other interested parties see outages by location, town, and village, and offers details on the number of affected customers and estimated restoration times. The map also provides the ability for PSEG Long Island to populate it with icons, directing viewers to command centers, shelters, and resources like ice and water in the case of severe storms. And it enables mobile devices to report outages with a single click.

One would assume the map also is an effort by PSEG Long Island to lower the number of calls it has to answer from customers during power outages and other emergency situations.

“Nobody wants to be without power, but when the unexpected happens, we know that providing our customers with information quickly and efficiently will help keep them updated with actionable data to make the decisions that are best for their families and businesses,” said Dan Eichhorn, vice president of customer services at PSEG Long Island. “Our new outage map is a quick, easy way for customers to access important information, regardless of the device they’re using.”

That’s all good news for PSEG Long Island and its customers, but the fact remains that while it is great to be able to get updates on power outages, knowing an outage has happened won't protect your businesses’ equipment or its revenues. But a UPS system will.
