Calgary Summer Snow Wreaks Havoc on Power

Our northern neighbors in Canada haven’t been enjoying the end of the summer like most of us. Residents of Calgary recently experienced a freak summer snowstorm, which left the city full of downed trees, blocked roads, and widespread power outages.

According to the Calgary Herald, the area saw over a foot of snow, and because the trees were not ready for Mother Nature, the weight bowed and broke several leaf-laden trees, resulting in dangerous conditions for roads and power lines.

“This is a very, very big job,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi, the Herald reported. “Cleanup from this will take an amount of time measured in days, if not weeks.”

Local utility company Enmax said approximately 30,000 customers were without power, many of which were experiencing a 12-hour outage or longer. This caused several school closings. While there was no mention of local businesses, no doubt hazardous driving conditions coupled with lack of power meant businesses had to go without for the duration, an unfortunate side effect of the erratic weather.

Fortunately for businesses and residents, there are ways in which people can prepare for even the craziest weather. Using power protection is one way everyone can maintain some kind of connection to the grid, no matter what is going on outside.

Power protection systems are a must for keeping a steady power supply during power cuts, spikes, surges and numerous other types of interruptions in energy. Power protection systems provide much needed safeguards against health hazards and data loss, and are necessary for maintaining communications systems.

Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert), a provider of power protection solutions, offers an array of products geared toward the educational sector, from outlet surge protectors to UPSs (uninterruptible power supplies). Using power protection equipment can save institutions thousands in costly damages due to outages as well as keeping things running smoothly and efficiently in the event of an interruption or total outage.

For educational facilities like those in Calgary, safety and security are top priorities; maintaining power ensures that these institutions can maintain these for both staff and student bodies.

With faculty and students heavily relying on power for communication, assignment management, interaction and e-learning, a power failure can spell disaster. A UPS can ensure that staff and students alike can remain connected while the rest of us deal with Mother Nature’s aftermath.
