Does Your Power Protection Also Save Data?

The dreaded power outage is not a reality anyone desires, especially when working on a big project. The concept that the dog ate the homework could become a reality if you named your PC Fido and failed to save your work. While such a move isn’t common, even an automatic save every 30 minutes doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Power protection strategies may be able to save the machine, but what about your data?

If that data is part of research in the Antarctic, you may be concerned about a little more than what you lost when the power protection kicked on. A recent post in the Delhi Daily News points to a power outage that latest 19 hours for researchers from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). A serious operational incident meant the 13-member team would be plunged into -67.7F temperatures.

While the team worked to get power and heat back on, the station still maintained good satellite communications. The team focused on drinking lots of hot tea and took advantage of a large kettle. All of them were reported as healthy during the outage. Contingency plans were in place and the team was considering alternative accommodations if power was not restored. The safety and well-being of the team was of primary concern, although the data involved in their research was also at risk.

To ensure no further loss of any data or other important information, the team did stop all research activities, except for meteorological observations. The Halley Research Station serves as the center for atmospheric science programs. A surgeon and emergency facilities are both on site, as well as a full-time doctor. In this particular situation, power protection would also lend considerable value when the power went out.

While any delay in operation is considered a cost to a research team or organization, the bigger cost would be in the loss of data due to a power outage and improper power protection. The latter can protect servers and other vital equipment in the event of a surge or an outage, but it doesn’t necessarily ensure data protection, unless it’s from Minuteman.

In the power protection field, Minuteman has built a strong reputation for not only delivering on power protection expectations, but also working to save data when the power goes down. The individual with the opportunity to back up their data before all power is lost can protect the organization from considerable loss. As such, Minuteman takes power protection to the next level.

While no level of power protection can keep -67.7F temperatures at bay, putting the right solutions in place to protect the work is the ideal contingency plan. If you haven’t reinforced your efforts with the right strategy or products, it’s time to update your plan for successful outcomes.
