Severe Storms Can Happen in the Off Months

The month of May generally arrives in the Midwest with mixed results. We’re excited about the onset of spring and the warmer weather that tends to be right around the corner. At the same time, we also know that tornado season is upon us. With the arrival of November in 2013, however, we get a reminder that Mother Nature doesn’t necessarily abide by the same schedule we do. Sometimes, the bad weather is going to come at an odd time.

A recent story in KSDK recapped what has happened for power customers throughout Missouri and Illinois. The need for power protection is never more evident than when violent storms arrive and leave nothing standing. Nearly 6,000 Ameren customers were left without power thanks to severe storms. At its worst, 40,000 people in the area couldn’t turn on the lights. The company has more than 1,000 workers actively trying to restore power to all customers.

While tornados and severe thunderstorms are not necessarily the norm this time of year, you can’t rely on assumptions if you live in the Midwest. There will be tornados in December and there will be snow in spring. My son recently graduated from high school and his last day of required attendance was nearly canceled due to an unusual snowstorm in early May. While it didn’t knock out our power, it did reinforce that you can’t assume anything when it comes to the weather.

For that reason alone, it’s important to protect your assets that rely on power at all times. Your computers, your phones, your data centers and anything else that rely on that main power source for operation must have the right power protection assets in place. This not only helps you stay online when the power comes back on, it also means the hardware connected can handle the surge when the power spikes and when it gets weak again.

If you rely on power to support your business, you need to make investments in solutions that support the assets that allow you to run your business. Don’t assume that just because it’s January that you can’t be hit with a severe storm that can render you out of business if you’re not prepared. You’ve likely been warned that you need to have a business continuity plan in place for your network – the same is true for your power sources and supported hardware.

Fortunately, Minuteman can help you in the process, providing uninterruptible power supply solutions that can protect your assets and even help save data before the lights go out. If your aim is to stay in business regardless of the challenges, it may be time to consider how this company can help.
