Lack of Power Protection Kills Shopping for a Day in Florida

The shopping experience – it’s something that is sweetened only by deep discounts. The individual who gets a rush from a new pair of shoes, the perfectly styled pants or a full new set of accessories gets an additional high when these items are had at rock bottom prices. Thus, the primary demand for the discount megamall is born. What happens, however, when that megamall doesn’t have power protection and the lights suddenly go out?

A recent post outlined the events that took place when Sawgrass Mills, a discount megamall, shut down in the wake of a power outage. Not only did the lights go out, spurring a call to the local law enforcement to empty the property; the mall never reopened that day. The result – hundreds of thousands in lost revenue.

The power failure, according to Florida Power & Light, was due to equipment failure. The utility hasn’t shared the reason for the failure, stating it would take a few days to determine the root cause. One thing is evident – the megamall lacked the power protection necessary to ensure that when an incident occurs that threatens the power source, the lights can stay on and business can continue as usual.

Power protection for a business is really about more than just ensuring the lights can stay on. When the megamall lost power, it created an environment of chaos that could easily damage a brand, creating a different perception in the minds of the customers affected. It could also keep potential shoppers away from the mall the next day or even the next several days, resulting in continued lost revenues.

Stores within the mall also faced the threat of damaged equipment from the power loss. Equipment connected to the main system was at risk of power surges and even a power drain, which can permanently damage that equipment. Computers, POS systems, PBX (News - Alert) systems, security cameras, power gates and more all rely on that main power supply for operation. When power is immediately lost and eventually restored, it can cause any one of these systems to malfunction or even stop working altogether.

Had the megamall installed power protection from Minuteman Power Technologies, the power outage could have been avoided altogether. A full line of products are designed specifically to keep power running to key systems at all times, while also protecting those systems when the power supplier encounters a problem. From online uninterrupted supply systems to power distribution units to surge suppressors, Minuteman designs its solutions to not only keep the power on, but to protect equipment so a business keeps its doors open for buying customers.
