CT Residents Count Down to Unexpected New Year's Eve Surprise, Take to Social Media to Share

It is already the second day of 2013, and while many across the country recently toasted to a happy New Year, some Connecticut residents found their celebration to be longer and darker than expected. Instead of counting down, it sounded more like “Three…two…where’s the power?”

More than 2,000 residents in Stratford, CT were plunged into an eerie darkness the second the clock struck midnight. Many thought it was a scam of sorts, joking around that perhaps the Mayans were a bit late with their “End of the world” prediction. Some referenced popular TV shows including “The Walking Dead” and NBC’s “Revolution (News - Alert),” a show that explores what life would be like with no power. At the end of the day (literally), the Southern Connecticut area was forced to call it an early night due to a holiday sans electricity, which was apparently due to a faulty power line.

The United Illuminating Company expected the outage to last for up to two hours, with the power eventually being restored around 1:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

Meanwhile, as soon as the outage hit as well as while the power continued to be down, residents took to social media to occupy their time, posting Facebook (News - Alert) statuses about their experience.

It seems the power gods just couldn’t get enough, either, having squeezed in a string of power outages on some of the most important days of the year. For instance, the Derby, CT area also experienced a power outage leaving approximately 1,200 residents without power on Christmas Day.

These smaller power outages serve as only a fraction of more disastrous incidents in the past. For example, it pales in comparison to the 12,000 Stratford residents who lost power in October 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy; however, it still goes to show just how important power protection is – especially when planning to spend quality time celebrating highly-anticipated holidays with loved ones.
