Together, General Motors (News - Alert) and ABB have come up with a clever way to repurpose used vehicle batteries for further power protection use. As this related article simply puts it, “When the giant battery in your electric vehicle needs to be replaced, simply take out the old unit and plug it into the house.”

Recently, it was revealed that in a modern take on traditional power protection, the two companies have repackaged five used batteries from the Volt electric car modular unit, which they discovered can actually provide three to five average homes with two hours of backup electricity. This information comes as especially important as individuals across the East Coast continue to readjust to life after Sandy’s destruction.

“The unit acts as an uninterruptible power supply and grid power balancing system, with the prototype providing 25kW of power and 50kWh of energy. The battery pack from the Volt can also be used to collect energy and feed it back to the grid,” Electronics news reported today.

According to General Motors, although the battery of the car seems to have reached its end, it actually still has about 70 percent of its lifespan left, only having used 30 percent or less, meaning there’s a ton of energy still available for reuse applications.

The companies claim that this system will one day be able to power a group of homes or small commercial buildings during a power outage, which will allow for storage of power during inexpensive periods for use during expensive peak demand. Additionally, it can help restore gaps in solar, wind or other renewable power generation.

This serves as just one more way power protection stays fresh and innovative to keep individuals safe – whether traveling in their cars or residing in their residential homes.
