Innovation in the telecommunications space is always good news for businesses and consumers alike as it means the stage has been set for new capabilities, improved features and even lower prices. When it comes to phone systems, operation and maintenance can get expensive. Now that we have options in the cloud, costs have come down and flexibility has been improved.

Vonage (News - Alert) is one company making waves in the phone systems world, creating opportunities in cloud communications through the development of new technologies. In doing so, the company continues to seek new patents and was granted seven by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in just the first quarter of 2015.

To date, Vonage now owns 75 U.S. patents and has more than 250 U.S. patent applications pending. And the company isn’t just focused on the U.S. market – it also has a number of foreign patents and pending applications in countries around the world. Its latest awards will allow the company to focus on the increasing importance of mobility, extending capabilities through enhancements and applications.

For mobility, one patent covers a system designed to identify when a mobile device has entered a specific location and redirect incoming calls to another device at that particular location. Such capability would likely appeal greatly to that mobile professional always on the go. A second patent addresses a method for updating contact lists of users within the communications network.

On the application side, Vonage secured a patent to enable a mobile app to receive and process push notifications that indicate a missed call, a new contact or an unread message. Another patent also allows an app provider to seamlessly verify that a telephone number provided by the mobile app is actually tied to a mobile device. As a result, the subscriber can use their native telephone number along with the app to ensure they have the authorization to do so.

For those roaming users, another patent covers a range of technology elements that prompt a mobile carrier to activate a call forwarding feature to enable low-cost incoming calls on a mobile device when traveling abroad.

Given the focus Vonage Business Solutions has specifically on these users,  the latest patent wins will not only meet a need, it will help to set a new standard in usage tied to business phone systems.

With more than 40 features available for business users, companies throughout the world are switching to Vonage Business Solutions. Providing access to solutions in the cloud, Vonage is meeting a growing need among the marketplace to enable businesses to compete on a more level playing field.
