Openness is becoming a central theme of networking just about everyplace in the network that you look. In one of the latest examples of this trend,  Centec Networks and EmbedWay Technologies today unveiled a 10 gigabit Ethernet software-defined networking white box solution.

Chinese company Centec, which in September closed a $47 million Series E funding round, brought its 1.2 terabit per second GoldenGate device to the table for this solution. EmbedWay Technologies contributed its intelligent infrastructure expertise.

The new ExSwitch6200/6300 series is a 10/40 gigabit Ethernet solution with native 100 gigabit Ethernet uplinks. It’s aimed at enterprise and telco data center deployments. And it support OCP (News - Alert) hardware design guidelines including the Open Network Install Environment and other bare metal switching using such operating systems as OpenSwitch.

Some folks define a white box as a PC or server without a well-known brand name. But Niall Robinson, vice president of global business development at ADVA Optical Networking (News - Alert), recently told me that white box refers to solutions for which the specifications are published. In some cases, such as OpenCompute, he says, no royalties are involved with white box solutions (as defined in the second case); in others, he adds, royalties may apply.

Speaking of ADVA and white box solutions, the company is among those supporting the new Facebook (News - Alert) Voyager white box solution. Voyager is being billed as the industry’s first white box transponder and routing solution.

Acacia Communications, semiconductor outfit Broadcom, hardware provider Celestica (News - Alert), Facebook, optical and photonic company Lumentum, and open source software company Snaproute have come together to build the first Voyager – a 1RU packet optical transport box that features 12x100gbps QSFP 28 clients and 4x200gbps 16QAM on the line side. But Facebook has contributed the specs for Voyager to the Telecom Infra Project so that anyone can build one.
