Businesses Can No Longer Afford Poor Application Performance

The siloes that have traditionally existed between enterprise IT and operations teams have been steadily eroding as technology performance becomes intrinsically tied to business goals and success. In today’s application and services-driven economy, businesses simply can’t afford poor application performance and it reflects poorly on an entire organization – not just the IT department.

As a result, businesses are increasingly looking at the crossover between high availability and high-functioning applications and services and the ability to meet core business objectives. Enterprises can simply not afford the loss of revenue, reputation and customer loyalty resulting from application downtime, outages and service issues.

The losses are actually measurable, with Gartner estimating business app outages can cost from $336K to $540K per hour. The Ponemon Institute (News - Alert) queried 450 U.S.-based data center professionals and found that downtime due to outages of mission-critical business apps and data can be as costly as $474K per hour. Those ranges are backed up by IDC (News - Alert), which places the damage from business application outages at Fortune 1000 companies anywhere from $100K to $500K or more per hour.

A unified approach to network monitoring and management that takes into consideration IT department benchmarks as well as the needs of operations teams and end users is the best way to combat the costly effects of business application downtime. A comprehensive solution should look at service uptime, system and application health, transaction performance, application error reporting and server uptime.

Teridion is a company that specializes in the next generation of content delivery and business application uptime by optimizing network routing. This is accomplished through intelligent management and routing specifically geared toward high-traffic cloud networks. Most importantly, the company offers unified management and a broad view of the entire network to ensure issues are dealt with before costly business application outages.

By taking the needs of an entire organization and its end users into consideration, enterprises can get a better handle on exactly which resources are required to keep applications running at peak performance. The alternative option is to shell out hundreds of thousands of dollars per hour in damage control from application outages, not a very attractive prospect for any business.
