New Methods of Networking Are Built on Older Technologies

In the early days of the Internet, when most people used it only for the occasional email and a visit to a simple, static Web page, few people could have predicted the future. Today, billions of interconnected devices – some operated by humans, some not – network together to make everything easier: banking, communications, commerce, manufacturing, energy exploration and entertainment. Video now takes up a huge chunk of the Internet, and old solutions simply can’t address this. In the time that has passed since, many companies have attempted to find better ways of routing information. Some of them have been successful, some haven’t.

Today, companies are still searching for the right path to the most optimal routing. They build on technology that has been evolving for the past 20 years, and try new approaches. In a recent blog post, Teridion’s Ameer Abbas believes it has found the “secret formula” that has eluded other technology solutions providers.

“We have seen Band-Aid approaches like CDNs that attack a certain niche's slice of static content part of the Internet, but that is it,” wrote Abbas. “It does not address the dynamic services-based Internet of today. It does not address real-time apps, video, conferencing and collaboration which is the Internet of now.”

Teridion’s approach has been to use the public cloud infrastructure for Internet networking. While public cloud infrastructure isn’t new, it’s a technology that has traditionally been used exclusively for compute and storage. Enterprises moving to cloud today are usually using it simply to replace their premise-based infrastructure.

“Teridion uses the cloud and connectivity between data centers to find and create new routes that did not exist until the cloud vendors started to expand around the world,” wrote Abbas. “In addition to Amazon, we have seen other major players like IBM (News - Alert), Oracle, Microsoft and Alibaba invest heavily in this realm.”

Using public cloud storage, companies like Teridion are able to offer their customers a nearly limitless path to wherever their business needs take them, anywhere in the world. And the solutions are based on underlying technology that has existed for years thanks to cloud vendors who have added more and more data centers and points of presence around the world.

“We have created an entirely new map of roads that previously did not exist,” wrote Abbas. “We have stood on the shoulders of (cloud) giants and have built something that was not possible a decade ago.”

By using (virtual) roads that have already been laid down, forward-thinking solutions providers have been able to build upon their solid foundation to meet networking needs of the future.
