When planning for a road trip, the steps are clear: Set the destination, pack the proper clothing, map the optimal route and off you go. Whether it’s Springsteen’s “Born to Run” or Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” serving as the soundtrack for your adventure, before one cranks up the tunes, they turn on their smartphone, open the Waze App and foot to the floor hit the open road. Content Delivery Networks work in a similar way (minus the soundtrack), and the high demands placed on the network from SaaS (News - Alert) offerings, over-the-top video and the like require a new approach to the way content is delivered.

Next Generation Content Delivery Networks, like that of Teridion, exist on the forefront of the adventure; avoiding buffering and congestion providing data to travel in the most efficient and optimal fashion. In a recent interview with IBM’s (News - Alert) Susan Carter, Teridion CEO and Founder, Elad Rave declares Teridion, “the Waze of the Internet.”

Carter opened by asking for some background on the firm, and without hesitation Rave responded resolutely, “Our company does something very simple, we make the Internet about 20 times faster.” Teridion has served as pioneer in this respect, as the first company to take the notion of leveraging cloud resources to improve network performance.

By leveraging the power of the cloud for content delivery, Teridion can more efficiently make use of network resources and alleviate the frustration of lagging for gamers or buffering for Netflix lovers as well as aid advertisers. In taking ramifications a step further, what if enterprise applications stop functioning properly due to network congestion? I’d consider that a major issue.

There are literally thousands of SaaS providers today, with hundreds of cloud operators and the rise in more personalized, dynamic content the network strains are real. Spanning areas like backup and sync, voice and video, cloud services, social media, gaming, ad and app serving as well as tunneling requires a next gen approach to content delivery to ensure predictability and low latency—users are everywhere, expect to connect anytime on any device.

CMO at Teridion Dave Ginsburg told TMC (News - Alert) in a recent interview, “There’s so much creativity and innovation going on in cloud based offerings right now. We want developers to be able to build these applications based on what their vision is irrespective of where the data centers are irrespective of what the underlying internet connectivity is.”

The truth is, our networks our antiquated, and have become a real pain point for developers and end users alike. We are at the tip of the iceberg in the transformation of content delivery, and a new infographic from Teridion illustrates the problem (s) and solutions quite clearly – for instance, noting an ecommerce site suffering from a one second page delay could lose up to $2.5 million in sales over the course of the year.

The days of keeping an atlas in the car have long come to an end (unless you are a believer in an upcoming zombie apocalypse), we use apps like Waze instead to tell us the optimum route, point out objects in the road and even police sightings. Next Generation Content Delivery brings this to the network—welcome to the network of tomorrow.
