T-Mobile Releases G2 Smartphone Specs

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Anyone eagerly anticipating the G2 smartphone from T-Mobile (News - Alert), PC Mag reports the carrier has released some of the new specs. This latest model is positioned as the nation’s first HSPA+ phone and will have an 800-Mhz processor, the Android 2.2 OS and “one-touch quick keys.” Some bloggers have already had their say regarding the G2’s (News - Alert) processor speed as some are concerned that performance may fall short when compared with smartphones such as the Samsung Vibrant and the Motorola Droid X. Both of these run the 1-Ghz processor, which benchmark faster than the Qualcomm Snapdragon in the G2.

The good news is that the G2 will be the first phone to run on T-Mobile’s new HSPA+ network, which is designed to be faster than other existing 3G networks. Tests completed earlier this year show the download speed at about 6 Mbps where HSPA+ was available. This performance equals that of Sprint’s (News - Alert) 4G network speeds.PC Mag was quick to point out that the G2 will be “Flash 10.1 ready” and not that the Adobe Flash 10.1 will be included. Then again, we don’t know a price to know if this is a bad deal or not.

In other T-Mobile news, one TMC (News - Alert) report earlier this summer spelled doom and gloom for T-Mobile USA. It seems the company is on a new list of firms that 24/7 Wall St. believes will no longer be in business, under that brand name, in 2011.T Mobile USA, the number-four U.S. cellular operator by subscribers (34 million), lags number-three Sprint, with 50 million customers. That isn't the big problem, however, according to 24/7 Wall St.  T-Mobile USA managed to eke out a profit of $306 million in 2009, down from $483 million in 2008.

In August, the company announced that top management at T-Mobile USA will change next spring. Robert Dotson will step down as T-Mobile USA president and CEO in May. Philipp Humm has been tapped as his replacement. Humm is the former CEO of T-Mobile Deutschland and currently is responsible for sales and service in Europe.

Also in August, TMC announced that 16 of T-Mobile’s current 3G devices, including more than a dozen smartphones, can benefit from enhanced speeds when they’re on the HSPA+ network. That includes the newest smartphone available from T-Mobile – the Samsung (News - Alert) Vibrant. Will the new network and smartphone live up to expectations and prove Wall Street wrong? Only time will tell.
