Network Processor: 6WIND, ADI Engineering to Offer High-Performance Packet Processing Platforms

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

6WIND, a provider of commercial packet processing solutions, and ADI Engineering, a supplier of hardware platforms for embedded networking and Intel Architecture technology, announced their alliance to offer packet network processing platforms for networking and telecom applications.

As part of the strategic partnership, both companies will work together to integrate the 6WINDGate packet processing software with ADI's Intel (News - Alert) Architecture-based ATCA and AMC boards. The alliance is expected to result in optimized off-the-shelf solutions suitable for networking and telecom OEMs.

“We are delighted to announce this partnership with ADI,” said Eric Carmès, CEO of 6WIND, in a statement. “The 6WINDGate software provides proven performance advantages for networking and telecom systems, so we look forward to delivering it as part of ADI's Intel Architecture-based products.”

ADI will be able to sell boards with 6WINDGate binaries pre-installed along with the operating system to OEMs who are looking for pre-packed solutions. Other OEMs, who want to differentiate their products via custom networking software, will be able to purchase 6WINDGate source licenses from 6WIND, to ensure maximum flexibility in their software development process, company officials said.

“With the newly announced partnership, 6WIND and ADI are eagerly bringing to market leading-edge packet processing solutions based on next-generation Intel Architecture processors,” said Steve Yates, president, founder and CTO of ADI Engineering (News - Alert). “This new partnership is yet another enabler of Intel Architecture's rapid transformation into a high-performance data plane processing technology.”

6WIND’s 6WINDGate solution is designed to eliminate up to twelve months from customers' product development cycles, while maximizing the performance of their multi-core platforms. 6WIND partners with suppliers of board-level products, operating systems and embedded software products worldwide to ensure the availability of a complete system-level ecosystem.

Recently, 6WIND and NetLogic Microsystems, a provider of intelligent semiconductor solutions, announced an expansion of their partnership to supply HQ solutions for next-generation telecom infrastructure, network and security appliances. 6WIND will develop solutions that will support NetLogic’s (News - Alert) XLP832 multi-core communications processor.

In addition, Advantech showcased AdvancedTCA (News - Alert), AMC, and Packetarium-based products using 6WIND’s 6WINDGate packet processing software at the recent International CTIA Wireless 2011 show in Orlando, Fla. The highly scalable, multicore platforms can be optimized for applications including eNodeBs, gateways for secure access and Mobility Management (MME), Packet Data Network (PDN) Gateways and other Evolved Packet Core (EPC) functions.

One of the main exhibits was a 40G 6-slot ATCA system integrating the Advantech MIC-5322 with two 6-core x86 network processors, the ATCA-7410 with Dual NetLogic Microsystems XLP832 8-core MIPS64 processors providing 40 GbE(KR4) and four 10 GbE(KR) ports to the Fabric Interface. The 40GbE switch technology integrated into the system is from Telco Systems (News - Alert), part of the recently announced technology agreement with Advantech.
