There are many different storage options available for home users and small businesses. Some might use an external hard drive while others might take advantage of cloud storage. But for many, the best option for keeping the countless files, documents and other data that we generate every day is network attached storage. And now that option is available for our friends across the pond and throughout Europe.
Shuttle, a Mini-PC case manufacturer, has developed the Omninas KD20, a network attached storage device specifically designed for small businesses and individual users. It is a two-bay system composed of white plastic and aluminum and has the benefit of being both quiet and energy efficient. The drive bays are hot-swappable and each one supports a 3.5-inch hard drive and solid-state storage up to 4 terabytes in size.
Users can set the drives in RAID-0, RAID-1 or JBOD settings. The device has a number of features including a card reader, two USB 2.0 ports and a USB 3.0 port. This allows you to connect even more external storage options to the network and gives you the ability to copy data from either USB drives or SD cards directly onto the network attached storage device. It boasts a gigabit Ethernet port, giving it network connectivity and has a DLNA-compatible media server for streaming content.
Here in the United States, many companies are moving beyond hardware-based network attached storage solutions. Red Hat, for example, has an open source, software-based network attached storage solution that can help facilitate enterprise storage.
