Why It May Be Time to Consider Mobile VoIP

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

In the quest to set yourself apart from the competition, have you examined your communication strategy? While some may view staying connected as a necessary evil, others explore the options available and how they can be leveraged to set a new standard. In many an environment, this means embracing new capabilities afforded with Voice over IP (VoIP) technology. When mobility is added into the mix, the capabilities with mobile VoIP take you to the next level.

The migration to VoIP meant that you could push all of your communications over the same network and enjoy the lower cost, greater efficiency and the streamlined approach to staying connected. Taking it one step further to embrace mobile VoIP means you can extend the same benefits and additional capabilities to those professionals in the field. If that field is international, you make the world a much smaller place with an international presence.

Like VoIP for your internal operation, it’s a virtualized capability for mobile users. That means all elements are easily managed on the web without the need to update software, implement hardware or employ a large IT staff. One account can be used to manage multiple offices and phone numbers around the world and the service is location agnostic. Move your IP phones to a whole new country and they will work just as they did before, with the same number, the same capabilities and the same connections.

In and of itself, mobile VoIP is becoming a powerful trend for both employers and employees as it allows for an increase in productivity, flexibility and accessibility without putting solutions in place that charge unreasonable fees. Plus, mobile VoIP enables users to circumvent restrictions on roaming and minutes, while also extending a feature set that is not yet available through standard mobile plans. And, if the provider’s towers are producing a weak signal, calls are easily higher quality over a strong Internet connection.

If all of these benefits sounds appealing, it’s time to search for a provider that can meet your needs. When selecting a provider to extend this service to your team, there are a few things to investigate. First, inquire as to the cost per user for a VoIP connection as a number of providers make their money this way. Others charge per phone number without limits on the number of people using that number. Second, look at the usability of the system, from installation to use it should be easy. Finally, dig into the fine print in the plan and beware of unlimited options that could be governed by fair use caps.

The benefits afforded with mobile VoIP are at the ready, as long as you’ve done your homework and can make the transition with ease.
