What Is 'True' Mobility?

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

You’d be hard pressed to find many wired forms of communications these days. The truth of the matter is, we’re a mobile era. Two decades ago, it was unheard of to have a mobile phone (or cellular phone, as we once called it) for regular communications purposes. Most people who were privileged enough to have one only used it for necessities, but with data and calling plans being as inexpensive as they are, even business decision makers are realizing the benefits to a truly mobile workforce.

A mobile device is only one aspect of true mobility. It’s the catalyst behind the mobile era; now CIOs are realizing that they can have a much more efficient work staff with mobility.

Thanks to significant improvements in technology, smartphones and virtual private networks, or VPNs, only mean that employees can access company systems and data, no matter where they are and what time it is of the day, which means working from home is highly possible and more efficient. Employees can now become productive in a netbook or phone while staying in a coffee shop as how you were doing back in the downtown office where they normally work. Work styles are now changing, and even the corporate culture is starting to go with the flow.

That, in a nutshell, is true mobility.

In the mobile landscape, we have other technologies like mobile VoIP that help to cut the wires. Mobility has paved the way for newer services, and with the proliferation of mobile devices and savvier applications, mobile VoIP is becoming part of daily work culture.

Analysts and experts agree that as businesses look to increase efficiency while cutting costs, not to mention move away from rising mobile phone costs, long contracts and traditional plans will be a thing of the past. Much like VoIP providers, mobile VoIP service providers will begin to bundle their services, making it easier for businesses to make the move towards a more mobile-centric communications system.

The use of mobile workforce can actually give a lot of benefits to both employers and employees. Because mobile VoIP offers the potential for unlimited voice calls for far less than traditional mobile voice plans, decision makers can attract and retain a talented workforce while keeping everyone connected, no matter where they are.
