VoIP Enables Mobility, Flexibility and Cost Savings for Today's BYOD Corporate Culture

By Laura Stotler, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Mobility is at the very heart of how businesses are operating in the new and evolving corporate culture. As employees push organizations to bring their own devices (BYOD) and companies scramble to manage and maintain a plethora of workspaces, mobility becomes the glue which enables this anytime and anywhere method of conducting business.

VoIP plays an important role in this business evolution, as organizations seek cost effective and efficient ways to keep their employees throughout the world connected. Particularly for small businesses and SMBs, VoIP offers an affordable alternative to cumbersome traditional telephony, enabling connectivity over existing IP networks. Most businesses already have stable and secure IP connections in place, and running voice over those connections is a natural evolution in the new mobile and multimedia business culture.

Cost is obviously the primary motivator for most important business decisions, and cost is what makes VoIP compelling. Since it works using an existing broadband connection, providers can charge a flat rate for service that is typically much less than PSTN and cellular services. VoIP also offers more flexibility for adds and changes as employees switch locations or require different features and service levels.

Mobility and portability are a huge benefit of VoIP, since workers may use their laptops or any broadband connected device to make calls, wherever they happen to be located. Additionally, calls cost the same whether a worker is calling locally or internationally, making VoIP a geographically diverse AND cost effective solution.

VoIP technologies have undergone massive improvements over the past couple of decades, and the poor sound quality, “echo,” and duplex mismatch errors that previously plagued offerings have been mostly eliminated. Today’s VoIP apps and equipment offer built-in troubleshooting to provide high levels of quality, and many solutions include valuable additions like texting, chat, conferencing and even video calls.

There’s no question that mobility is paramount to today’s corporate culture, and organizations are looking for reliable, flexible and cost effective solutions that will enable the anywhere and anytime way of doing business. VoIP fulfills all those needs and offers a valuable alternative to traditional telephony and cellular services.
