CounterPath (News - Alert) Corporation, a provider of VoIP technology that empowers people to connect, communicate and collaborate, revealed that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has approved its patent no. US 8,737,351 titled "Methods and systems for reducing MAC layer handoff latency in wireless networks."
This patent adds to CounterPath's intellectual property portfolio.
Handoff has been a burning issue in this ever increasing IEEE (News - Alert) 802.11-based wireless LANs, VoIP and similar applications. The need is to have a new handoff procedure which reduces the MAC layer handoff latency.
CounterPath’s patent is concerned with improving latency issues when completing a handoff to a wireless network. It covers the technology concerned with reducing that frustrating delay, enabling a more fluid, seamless call to proceed when mobile users transit between a Wi-Fi and mobile network.
"CounterPath offers the most comprehensive set of features available in a softphone client today," Donovan Jones (News - Alert), president and chief executive officer of CounterPath said in a statement.
“When matched with CounterPath hosted gateway and provisioning solutions, it represents a firm commitment to improving the mobility options most requested by enterprise and consumer users today," Jones added.
The primary benefit of this patent is that it enables CounterPath to implement technologies which significantly reduce the time taken to switch VoIP calls from Wi-Fi to mobile networks. The delay experienced by users of other solutions is sometimes so large that they believe the call has dropped.
