Report Finds Biz Mobile VoIP to Increase 'Tenfold' by 2015

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

You kind of knew that mobile VoIP for business was going to be big, it’s a hard model to beat, but did you know that it was going to increase tenfold over the next five years, with IP-PBX accounting for the majority of usage?

Such are the findings of a recent report from In-Stat (News - Alert) looking at the mobile VoIP usage among businesses. According to a write-up from Serbian biz convergence writer Dusan Belic, mobile VoIP is being adopted in both the consumer and business segments, “but has only recently begun to be implemented in the business environment.”

Belic says that In-Stat puts a number to that tenfold growth statement, saying current growth rates are strong enough to where, “by the end of the forecast period in 2015, users will have grown to nearly 83 million lines/seats.”

As Belic notes, mobile operators themselves are embracing mobile VoIP since the demand for these offerings is only increasing, and will only increase for the foreseeable future. He notes that the In-Stat has found that hotspots “open the potential for using VoIP over Wi-Fi as more of a mobile service rather than a residential or business service” as well.

As TMC’s (News - Alert) Stefanie Mosca wrote recently, the mobile evolution has encouraged us as a society to adapt to a mobile environment wherever we can. It only makes sense; mobile devices are not only convenient, but also provide a variety of benefits to enhance everyday life.

The majority of mobile users use their devices for personal reasons, but now more and more companies are providing their employees with mobile devices to allow them access to their work email, databases, documents, etc. at anytime from any location.

Even office commodities like VoIP are beginning to transition to mobile. Mobile VoIP is the practical next step for enterprises and small to medium-sized business (SMB) alike to move towards enterprise mobility and a mobile workforce.

Mobile VoIP is an extension of VoIP that allows IP-based calls to be made from the convenience of a mobile handset. Mobile VoIP has become a popular and less expensive solution and with solid growth rates in place, the pace doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
