Mobile VoIP: The Next Big Outsourcing Location - Bangladesh?

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Outsourcing business opportunities in the VoIP industry are expected to touch more than $1 billion by 2015, which "could bring good fortune to the Bangladesh IT industry."

This was the topic of discussion at a seminar organized by REVE Systems during BASIS Softexpo’2011. Delivering a keynote address, Sanjit Chatterjee (News - Alert), director of marketing with REVE Systems, outlined what he saw as the various opportunities in the VoIP industry open to Bangladeshi entrepreneurs.

The panelists included representatives from the Indian Telecom industry, talking about Indian mobile operators and the success of that outsourcing model. Sukanta Dey, ex-President of Tata Teleservices (News - Alert), told the panel's audience that mobile operators globally are concentrating on their core expertise areas and outsourcing IT services, network management and customer care/ billing departments to specialist companies.

Habibullah Karim, CEO of Technohaven Company, and immediate past president- BASIS, said “Bangladesh has been listed as one of the top 30 global outsourcing destinations. Bangladesh has right skilled manpower in the IT/ Telecom domains and is very well placed to tap this opportunity."

The audience was told to "post the updates of the event live on Facebook (News - Alert)," according to REVE officials, who noted that this "saw great participation from the audience. Prizes were given away to two individuals for their best reporting of the event on Facebook."

During the recent ITEXPO West 2010 conference, TMC’s (News - Alert) Group Managing Editor Patrick Barnard sat down to chat with Sanjit Chaterjee about the company, their offerings and the mobile VoIP market.

Chaterjee said during the interview that the company offers two ranges of products - one for mobile voice over IP and infrastructure products like the VoIP Switch, iTel, and billing products. “In early 2010, we launched our proprietary softswitch product and are expanding the capability from a standalone to a distributed architecture,” Chaterjee told Barnard.

In addition, the company offers a tunneling product called the Byte Saver that saves on bandwidth consumption when VoIP calls are made from mobile phones. This, Chaterjee explained, is key for the retail end user because, “they are looking to save on data costs.”
