A Year in Mobile Video: Dialogic 2011 Recap and Predictions for 2012

By Stefanie Mosca, TMCnet Managing Editor

Dialogic (News - Alert), a provider of video, voice and data solutions for 3G and 4G networks, while not as widely recognized for, has a substantial influence in the mobile video market for its video gateway solutions and integrated mobile platforms. As mobile platforms continue to evolve and are integrated into our everyday lives, it is not only changing how we as consumers utilize them, but also how companies like Dialogic develop applications and solutions to support them.

TMCnet recently had the opportunity to catch up with Dialogic to discuss the past year and how advancements in mobile video have affected the company’s services. Read the full exchange below.

What do you see as being the biggest mobile video trends and advancements this past year?

More and more value-added services are becoming video enabled, such as video SMS, location- based services incorporating video, video IVRs, video conferencing and social media applications that incorporate video. With the proliferation of smartphones and faster networks, mobile video is becoming a service that subscribers are using in their everyday lives - for personal reasons and in business.

Were there any specific advancements technologically that Dialogic was able to capitalize on in 2011?

In 2011, we released our PowerMedia Host Media Processing 5.0 software. This was the first solution in the PowerMedia HMP product family to incorporate a distributed architecture that enables enterprise and service provider customers to build innovative cloud-based HD voice and video solutions in both Linux and Windows.

HMP 5.0 provides HD voice and video play/record, conferencing, multimedia streaming, transcoding, automated interactive audio and video solutions (IVR and IVVR), and high-end live interaction applications, such as contact centers and video portals. HMP 5.0 uses Dialogic's patent-pending video technology, which enhances video quality through improved bit-rate control. It also supports virtualization and runs on general-purpose servers without the need for specialized hardware, which reduces costs.

How do you see mobility in the workplace changing the way we work and do business?

The use of smartphones and tablets keeps employees connected whether they're at the office or working remotely. We'll see more and more employees getting access to these smart devices, and laptops will no longer be essential all the time. Additionally, when enterprise developers create new business-related services, they'll need to keep mobility at the front of their minds. These services have to work on mobile devices, since these devices are becoming a normal part of day-to-day business operations.

What are your predictions for 2012 for the mobile video market?

The mobile video market will continue to grow and evolve and consumers will have higher expectations for video quality. Content providers will need to find ways to measure the perceptual quality of video on their networks. Better measurement of perceptual quality will enable video content providers to quickly identify, isolate and correct issues so that they can deliver the quality video that consumers expect. At the same time, by offering a variety of high quality video services, content providers can charge higher subscription fees and enhanced advertising rates while still adhering to Service Level Agreements. Perceptual quality measurement may just be the key to success when it comes to mobile video monetization!

What can we look forward to from Dialogic in 2012?

Dialogic's NextGen (News - Alert) products continue to gain traction with some of the largest mobile networks in some of the fastest growing markets in the world. In early 2012, we'll be introducing several new products that we believe will create new revenue opportunities and reduce expenses for mobile network operators, especially as data crunches begin to dominate mobile networks.

Does your company find social media to be a benefit in reaching out to your customers and starting discussions? If so, why?

Yes, social media has enabled us to form some new relationships with customers, media and analysts. Networking on Twitter, Facebook (News - Alert) and LinkedIn is a great way to make informal introductions, stay in close touch with contacts and learn about market trends and news from other companies.
