D2 Technologies, GCT Semiconductor Join Forces to Offer Mobile VoIP over WiMAX

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

D2 Technologies, a provider of embedded IP communications software platforms, and GCT Semiconductor, a supplier of WiMAX (News - Alert) solutions to the global market, have teamed up to deliver VoIP over WiMAX for mobile devices based on the Android and Linux operating systems.

D2’s mCUE converged communications client and the vPort embedded VoIP engine are two reference designs incorporating GCT’s GDM7205, the world’s first mobile WiMAX IEEE 802.16e Wave 2-compliant chip solution, according to company officials.

In February TMCnet reported the launch of D2 Technologies’ mCUE product line that helps OEMs and service providers to deliver the most advanced communications capabilities for Android-based products.

Going forward, GCT’s compact, single-chip GDM7205 offers a flexible architecture coupled with ultra low power, ideally suited to satisfy the high demands of multimedia processing and wireless connectivity, the company said.

When integrated with D2’s vPort software platform, it provides all of the components necessary for manufacturers to quickly bring dual mode WiFi (News - Alert) and WiMAX enabled mobile devices to market. vPort features voice quality assurance technology such as jitter buffer and packet loss compensation, and enables rich voice features achieved with minimal memory and CPU impact.

mCUE enables today’s most in-demand applications and has features including Skype (News - Alert) interoperability, video call/chat, seamless call handover and HD voice, the company said.

This combined solution is designed to offer OEMs and ODMs a faster and more economical way to deliver a range of WiMAX mobile devices to market with broad VoIP and IP communications capabilities.

At the 2010 International CTIA Wireless (News - Alert) Show, D2 is demonstrating Android mobile VoIP calls over WiMAX via mCUE running on the TI Zoom OMAP3 II mobile development platform integrated with GCT’s GDM7205 modem IC.

“WiMAX and 4G networks are poised for phenomenal growth; however, mobile devices that can take advantage of their greater bandwidth and speed have been slow to enter the market,” said Doug Makishima, chief operating officer at D2 Technologies.

The new solution, according to Makishima, offers a turnkey mobile platform for delivering 4G unified communications/VoIP over WiMAX on the Android or Linux OS.

At CTIA, D2 will also showcase an optimized integration of its vPort VoIP engine embedded directly on GDM7205 for low-cost, single-chip mobile applications.

Kyeongho Lee, president and CEO of GCT Semiconductor (News - Alert), said GCT is delivering the most advanced chipsets possible for efficiently and economically delivering new products built on OS such as Linux.

“By porting D2’s vPort to the GDM7205, OEMs and ODMs get the industry’s most advanced IP communications capabilities in a small and efficient form factor – in effect, a complete solution for accelerating design-to-market timelines for VoIP over WiMAX mobile devices,” Lee added.
