Practical Applications of Technology in Schools

By Lavanya Rathnam, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Technology is having a positive impact in every facet of our society, and education is no exception. More and more schools are embracing technology to improve the quality of education imparted to students, and to improve the overall efficiency of the school district board. The best part about this trend of using technology is that different school districts come up with innovative ways to make the most of what technology has to offer.

One area where technology is used widely is to impart training to students. Internet connectivity has become almost universal in schools, with more than 97 percent of school districts having access to the Internet, according to a report released by the FCC (News - Alert) in 2010. Using the Internet, teachers are able to reach students more effectively.  Many school districts are providing training to teachers in using mobile devices and apps as a medium of instruction. Since these apps are interactive and lively, it keeps the students engrossed, which means they are able to learn the concepts better.

Besides using technology in classrooms, it is also used to keep parents updated on the activities of their children. There are many Web portals today that allow teachers to send general and specific messages to parents to help them track the performance of their child at school. Some school districts like Virginia use social media tools like Twitter (News - Alert) to communicate with parents, so the teachers and parents are on the same page when it comes to a student's development and performance.

Other than these applications, technology is used to televise board meetings to the entire community. According to recent press reports, Prince William County (MD) public schools allow the entire community to view the meetings of the school board through video streaming or listen to them as podcasts; similarly, Omaha public schools list their meetings as videos and podcasts on their website. Members of the community who are interested to know more about the district's performance and future plans can download and listen to the same. All these trends reflect the growing importance of technology in education.
