MobileIron and Cisco to Improve BYOD Compliance

By Frank Griffin, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Enterprises around the world are eager to integrate the mobile devices of their work force to the organization's network, but it presents many challenges. One of the most pressing issues is security. With so many devices, operating systems, and applications, integration becomes very difficult to say the least. MobileIron, a provider of security and management for mobile apps, content, and devices, announced it has integrated the Cisco (News - Alert) Identity Services Engine (ISE) v1.2 to give users who bring their personal devices to the workplace the option of joining the network with full compliance with the company's security policies without having to deal with the IT department.

This collaboration lets Cisco ISE take advantage of MobileIron's management and security capabilities to update dynamic network privileges based on the state of the device by supporting network access control.

The ISE is a next-generation solution for network admission control (NAC), which assigns network access privileges and device security posture based on user credentials and attributes. This integration gives ISE access to information about the configuration and security state of mobile devices by making better informed network admission decisions.

ISE uses MobileIron to make intelligent decisions about network admission and access controls while continuing to manage and enforce mobile devices with setting and policies for application and content. The workflow is designed to simplify employee self-service, thus eliminating the need to use IT resources.

"Our goal is to deliver the integrations that our customers need to be able to go Mobile First faster. This integration of industry-leading network admission control (NAC) and enterprise mobility management (EMM) technology lets MobileIron and Cisco customers extend their mobile security policies to the network and their network policies to their mobile devices. The whole process is fast, efficient, and secure," said Ojas Rege, VP Strategy, MobileIron.

The solutions MobileIron provides are used by some of the largest organizations around the world, offering scalable architecture, rapid innovation, and best practices with their mobile initiatives, including 8 of the top 10 automotive manufacturers, 7 of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies, 5 of the top 10 banks, 5 of the top 10 law firms, and 4 of the top 10 retailers.

Key features of the Cisco ISE, meanwhile, include rigorous identity verification; industry-first device profile feed service; extensive policy enforcement; security compliance; self-Service device onboarding; automated device compliance checks; dependable anywhere access; operational efficiency; embedded enforcement; broad solution ecosystem; multivendor infrastructure support; and extendable policy from access into the datacenter with TrustSec policy networking.
