Core Requirements for Enterprise Mobile Device Management

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

It’s no secret that businesses only benefit when it comes to implementing mobile device management solutions, particularly in an era where BYOD is becoming the norm.

By optimizing the functionality of mobile devices while controlling and protecting the data and configuration settings for all mobile devices in a network, support costs and business security risks are lowered. However, on the enterprise level, mobile device management is an entirely different beast to deal with.

For enterprises that are dealing with 20,000 or more devices, mobile device management seems like a solution that won’t exactly fit something so large. However, there are core requirements enterprises should focus on when it comes to large-scale management so that mobile device management seems less of a daunting task and more of a streamlined, easy-to-use necessity.

To achieve what MobileIron refers to as “real-world scale,” there are nine specific core requirements that enterprises should note in an effort to figure out whether a vendor can support their needs or not on the level required.

The first and ninth core requirements are of particular interest, as they pertain to how efficiently an enterprise can manage devices securely.

First up, MobileIron says that simultaneous registrations will address the challenge of constant device change. With devices always in flux as technology evolves, so does the device adoption. Rather than posing a challenge when it comes to registering, having a process in place to register multiple devices all at the same time alleviates confusion. The important question the enterprise should ask is can more than 50 devices be registered without a problem? If the answer is no, the enterprise should seek a solution that can handle this registration volume without error.

On the list is also operational efficiency. Essentially, it comes down to the IT administrator being able to handle 10,000 to 20,000 devices, complete with system upgrades, all solo.

Some other core requirements include high-volume app delivery, high-volume e-mail delivery and operational longevity. These, amongst a few others, are essential for deploying a scalable mobile infrastructure.
